Short version: Read it.
Long version: Reeeeaaadddd itt.
Longer version: Nothing I can say will quite capture Sopihia Amoruso’s bad-ass attitude, I’m not her. I’ve been reading this book for months, which for me is a rarity, because I didn’t want it to be over. And its pretty much a self-help book! Alas, I’ve finished it, but I plan on rereading it many a time. The narrative is funny, cheeky, feisty and direct. I’ve never been a rebel, a drifter, a punk or anything that exciting. But, I have felt like an outsider before and that is something that I think resonates with everyone on some level. To feel different, like you don’t exactly fit in or that people don’t understand you is part of the human experience, but some people are better at faking it. What I love about Sophia’s story is that she never even tried to fit in or fake it, but embraced her differences. Even if you aren’t inspired by her story, you will understand that she is her own person. She knows herself, listens to herself and uses that knowledge in all aspects of her life.
I would highly recommend reading this book, especially if you are a female. Its about empowerment, trusting yourself, working hard and embracing your unique ideas. You’ll learn a thing or two, plus its entertaining.
This book makes me feel more comfortable with doing what I think is right for me. To still listen to the world’s advice, but to listen to my gut at the end of the day. It further instills in me that you don’t know unless you try and that its okay if you have to try more than once.
Review that I like:
“The founder of Nasty Gal offers a sassy and irreverent manifesto for ambitious young women
At seventeen, Sophia Amoruso decided to forgo continuing education to pursue a life of hitchhiking, dumpster diving, and petty thievery. Now, at twenty-nine, she is the Founder, CEO, and Creative Director of Nasty Gal, a $100+ million e-tailer that draws A-list publicity and rabid fans for its leading-edge fashion and provocative online persona. Her story is extraordinary—and only part of the appeal of #GIRLBOSS.
This aspirational book doesn’t patronize young women the way many business experts do. Amoruso shows readers how to channel their passion and hard work, while keeping their insecurities from getting in the way. She offers straight talk about making your voice heard and doing meaningful work.” – Goodreads
